My Active Sister

It's funny how different my sister and I turned out. I've always been happiest when I'm reading, but she can hardly stand to sit still for a minute. Maybe it has to do with our experiences in the womb: My mom was on bedrest with me during the first trimester, but she skied while pregnant with my sister... Until the time she fell on her, that is!

When my family and I used to go skiing when I was a kid, my sister was practically fearless. My mom always described me as the cautious one — she said when I stood at the top of the slope, you could almost see the wheels turning in my head as I planned my descent. No such hesitation for my sister — bundled up in childrens ski clothing like a little penguin, she would hurdle down the slope right after my dad, trying to copy his every move.

Skiing isn't easy when you're a kid. Not only are you fairly uncoordinated still, but then you are bundled up in 8 different layers of clothing by your protective mom, including bulky kids ski pants and a kids snowboard jacket. It's hard to move in all that, let alone ski! Not being the active type, I was somewhat disappointed when we stopped going skiing in the early 90s, but not nearly as disappointed as my sister!

Perfect Freedom...?

One of the best things I like about being a freelance writer is that I am perfectly free to up and go whenever I want. Not that I really take advantage of this very often, but the fact is that the opportunity is there. Because I have a laptop with WiFi capabilities and the ability to work on the road, I could book a last minute vacation any time I like — as long as I am willing to work on the road during my vacation, of course.

Being able to take vacations whenever I want doesn't mean I necessarily do, though. There are plenty of other obligations that keep me home: namely, 2 cats, 2 dogs, a horse, and a whole bunch of responsibilities at the barn where said horse is stabled. Plus, it's not as easy to work on vacation as you might think — I usually leave home with the best of intentions, and return home with nothing to show for it!

I guess it's a good thing, then, that the place I like to work the most is right here, at home!

Travelling on a Low Budget

Oh how I love to travel. But oh, how I have no money. Yeah, I’m broke. I barely have a penny to my name, if you don’t include all of the actual pennies I keep in a jar by my bed, and although I could probably put those in some sort of Coinstar somewhere, I’m guessing it won’t be enough to go to Paris.

But Canada – Canada is a vacation I can get behind. Driving distance away from a Lake Louise vacation, I can easily get a Banff vacation package and take some Canada tours which are only a little bit of money (on my credit card, unfortunately) and continue to take the trips I want to take without worrying a whole lot about whether or not it is affordable.

The real question is how many people I can get to go with me. I know my friends like vacations, I know my friends like Canada, and I know they are all also broke. Sounds like Canada is a match made in heaven for all of us. The real question is how we are going to get all of the booze we need to truly be happy.

Fisher Men and Women Unite to Protect Watersheds of Georgia

With over 400 chapters, Trout Unlimited has been active since 1959 throughout the United States in 35 of our states. The primary effort and mission of the conservation organization is to protect, conserve and restore the cold water fisheries of North America and their watersheds.

There is a local chapter, called the Upper Chattahoochee Chapter, which is popular with fly fishing guides GA because of the protection it provides to our home waters.
